We present here some studies about the massage effects in patients with specific pathologies and other cases, such as the impact in the productivity of the employees:
A study by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami found that after five weeks, a group of 26 employees who had twice-weekly, 15-minute massages in the office fared better than a control group of 24 employees who were just told to close their eyes and relax. The massaged group experienced reduced stress and improved performance, while the control group did not. Using electroencephalograms (EEG), researchers measured alpha and beta waves in both groups, and found massage recipients to be more alert. Stress hormones in the saliva of the massaged group were lower than in the control group. The massaged workers completed math problems in half the time as normal and with half the errors they had before they were massaged. The math skills of the control group did not improve. The massage recipients also said they were less fatigued and more clear-headed. That's significant, considering job stress is estimated to cost the economy $200 billion every year in lowered productivity, compensation claims, absenteeism, health insurance and direct medical expenses, according to the International Labour Organization's 1993 World Labour Report. 2) research shows that massage therapy works
Adults exposed to rosemary
showed decreased frontal alpha and beta power, suggesting increased
alertness. They also had lower anxiety levels and performed math
computations faster. Adults exposed to lavender showed increased beta power,
suggesting increased relaxation. They performed math computations not only
faster but also with fewer errors and had less depressed mood. 4) depressed adolescent mothers Depressed adolescent
mothers received ten 30-minute sessions of massage therapy or relaxation
therapy over a five-week period. Although both groups reported lower anxiety
following their first and last therapy sessions, only the massage therapy
group showed behavioral and stress hormone changes including a decrease in
anxious behavior, pulse, and salivary cortisol levels. A decrease in urine
cortisol levels suggested lower stress following the five-week period for
the massage therapy group. Following one month of
parents massaging their children with diabetes, the children's glucose
levels decreased to the normal range and their dietary compliance increased.
Also the parents' and children's anxiety and depression levels decreased. 6) elderly retired volunteers providing versus receiving massage Elderly retired volunteers
were assessed after giving infants massage for a month versus receiving
massage for a month themselves. Results were: 1) they reported less anxiety
and fewer depressive symptoms and an improved mood after giving infants
massage; 2) their pulse decreased; 3) their cortisol levels decreased; and
4) they reported improved self esteem and a better lifestyle (e.g. fewer
doctor visits and more social contacts) after the one month period. These
effects were stronger for giving infants the massages than receiving
massages themselves, suggesting that the massager can benefit from simply
giving massages. 7) post-traumatic stress disorder Massage therapy decreased
the anxiety, depression and stress hormone levels (cortisol) of children who
had post-traumatic stress disorder following Hurricane Andrew. In addition,
their drawings became less depressed. Cravings, anxious
behaviors and the number of cigarettes smoked were reduced by self-massage
(rubbing ear lobes or hands whenever subjects experienced a craving). 9) alleviating stress in newborns Stressful effects of
intensive care nursery environments are reviewed including the effects of
high-intensity noise, bright lights, cold, invasive and painful procedures.
Touch interventions were associated with 1) fewer startle responses, 2)
decreased need for ventilation, and 3) fewer clenched fists. The stimulated
infants averaged greater weight gain, were awake and active for a greater
period of time and scored better on the Brazelton Scale. Adults with chronic low-back pain found relief from massage therapy, according to a research study. Massage eased pain, reduced depression and anxiety, and improved sleep and range of motion. Hernandez-Reif, M., Field, T., Krasnegor, J., Theakston, T. (In Review). Chronic low back pain was reduced and range of motion was improved with massage therapy. International Journal of Neuroscience. Children in the massage
group exhibited less stereotypic behavior and showed more on-task and social
relatedness behavior during play observations at school, and they
experienced fewer sleep problems at home. Fathers gave their infants
daily massages 15 minutes prior to bedtime for one month. The fathers in the
massage group showed more optimal interaction behavior with their infant. Massage therapy sessions
given prior to debridement (skin brushing) decreased depression and anger,
and the subjects appeared less anxious during behavior observations and
reported less pain. Lower pulse and cortisol suggested lower stress levels. 14) sexual therapy for couples Couples that massage each other, suffer from less anxiety and make improvements in the physical intimity. Field, T., & Hernandez-Reif, M. (In Preparation). Couples experience better relationships when they massage each other.
